District 33 Participatory Budgeting Project Status Update

In the first four years of Participatory Budgeting in District 33 over 7800 people have voted to award funding for 20 projects throughout the District for a total of $5,801,000 of capital funding. This report gives an update on the status of those projects.

Year 1 - PB 2013 Funded Projects

1. District-Wide Tree Planting

Year 2 - PB 2014 Funded Projects

1. NYCHA Playground Repairs
Status: PRE-SCOPING MEETINGS HAVE BEGUN

2. Gowanus Community Center Renovations and Repairs
Status: PENDING*

Cost:  $325,000 (plus $150,000 awarded in year prior at CM Levin’s discretion)
Location: 420 Baltic St.- Gowanus Houses

* Council Member’s office and NYCHA working to identify an organization who can operate the community center. Once an operator has been identified funds can be released.

3. McGolrick Park Playground Reconstruction
Status: IN PROCURMENT (Construction is scheduled to begin in Spring 2017)

4. BK Story Voyager (previously BOOKlyn SHUTTLE) - Book Bus and Education Center 
Status: COMPLETE

Cost:  $198,000
Location: CB1 – Mobile

Jose Leon, Deputy Executive Director, from St Nick’s Alliance- “The BK Story Voyager, the flagship of our literacy immersion, has been a big hit with our children and greater community. The BK Story Voyager began making regular weekly visits to our after school sites such as PS 34 this past winter and has participated in several community activities such as the Go Green and street fairs.”

5. P.S. 261 Bathroom Renovations

Year 3 - PB 2015 Funded Projects

1.    NYCHA Playground/Active Space Renovation
Status: PRE-SCOPING MEETINGS HAVE BEGUN

NYCHA has broken this down into three projects. Details below:
     9048 -Grounds Improvements at Wyckoff Gardens - $300,000
This contract is for a basketball court renovation – a Pre-scoping meeting is to be scheduled this month.

2.    Green Space Landscaping & Beautification at NYCHA Development 
Status: PRE-SCOPING MEETINGS HAVE BEGUN

3. Safer Pedestrian Crossings on Meeker Avenue
Status: IN PROCESS

Funds contributed to an ongoing redesign of the Meeker Avenue pedestrian crossings and street.

4. PS 38 & MS 447: Bathrooms that Work
Status: SCOPED, Expected Completion in Summer 2017

5. PS 110: Install Modern Technology
Status: COMPLETED

Cost: $175,000
Location: PS 110, Greenpoint

Helped fund smartboard installations in every classroom in the building. Principal Annah Amato called PB “a great process, which allows us to have a voice in our community.”

The projects below have all been entered in the Fiscal 2017 City Budget and our office is working with the agencies and organizations to ensure they all are completed as envisioned by the community.
